Manchester United’s appointment of Erik ten Hag as the new coach for next season has rung a few alarm bells at FC Barcelona, as the Ajax coach is expected to make a move for Frenkie de Jong in the summer.
The two had worked together at Ajax and it appears ten Hag is keen on a potential renewal at Old Trafford next season.
However, in a recent interaction with the press, Xavi Hernandez has poured water over Manchester United’s hopes of signing de Jong this summer, with the Barcelona coach determined to keep hold of the midfielder’s services beyond the summer.
“He is a very important player for me, for the club and for the team. Due to his quality and conditions, he should mark an era at the club.
“He is at a very good level since I arrived and he has to continue scoring goals, assisting, being the protagonist “, said Xavi (h/t Diario Sport).
Frenkie de Jong has indeed been one of the most improved players at Barcelona since the turn of the year. He has added a whole new dimension to his game, controlling the midfield expertly while offering the composure and technicality in the middle of the park.
With Sergio Busquets currently in the final phase of his illustrious career, de Jong’s prolonged stay at the club could be vital for Barcelona, and the thoughts are echoed by Xavi as well.
“He could be one of the best midfielders in the world. If it were up to me, he would continue here for many more years”, the Spaniard added, citing his desire to keep hold of the Dutchman for the foreseeable future.
Fortunately for him and Barça, Frenkie’s current contract at Camp Nou doesn’t expire until 2026, so even if Man United come knocking on the door, the Catalans will have the leverage to hold out for a hefty price-tag, for the services of their midfield asset.
