It has been another disappointing season for Barcelona midfielder Riqui Puig. Once regarded as the brightest prospect coming through the ranks at La Masia, the 22-year-old has failed to translate his potential into success at the first-team level.
Puig made his senior debut back in 2018 under Ernesto Valverde but has never gotten an extended run in the starting XI, apart from a brief period under Quique Setien.
The Spaniard was pretty much ostracized by Ronald Koeman during his time as the manager. So, when Xavi Hernandez took over the reins in November last year, it was believed that things could finally improve for Puig at Barça.
However, that has hardly been the case. In the 33 matches that Xavi has managed so far, Puig has been involved in just eight of them, totalling up to only 317 minutes. Only one among those eight games has been a start in La Liga.
Furthermore, the La Masia graduate has not featured in any of the Blaugrana’s previous ten matches across all competitions (7 La Liga, 3 UEFA Europa League).
It does not bode well for the 22-year-old midfielder, with Mundo Deportivo reporting that Puig is expected to depart Barcelona in the summer. It is claimed that the Catalans could sell him to generate income or use him as a makeweight in a deal for a player to reduce transfer fees.
Considering that Barça are set to welcome Franck Kessie in the summer and Carlos Soler is also being heavily linked, Puig’s prospects would further fade if he were to continue at Camp Nou.
With his career failing to take off at his boyhood club, a fresh start elsewhere could be what the 22-year-old midfielder needs at this point.
